Calf Eyes
One October day I saw a bull standing over this calf
lying next to a watering trough.
A number of cows stood nearby. The calf looked strange so I walked over to
check on it. It didn't move. The calf had apparently died only a short time
before I arrived, the eyes seemed
still to hold some bit of life in them. They would soon gray over.
In the
country dead animals are a common enough sight that after a while they do
not shock. The roads are littered with deer, raccoons and porcupines that
failed their night crossings. Casualties in the fields, like this calf, soon
become the food of eagles, ravens and coyotes. |
