An important aspect of the photography of Franz Brown has been his work with master craftsman Larry Belitz of South Dakota. Belitz spent many years teaching on the Pine Ridge Reservation (Lakota) in South Dakota. He made a special effort to preserve Lakota the knowledge for the production of various artifacts including the preparation of buffalo hides using traditional tanning methods and the use of quillwork from preparation of the quills to their final assembly as an element in clothing, pipe bags and so forth.
