Porcupine Quillwork

07. Porcupines are small mammals covered with protective hairs or "quills." The quills are hollow and have sharp points. Many native Americans learned to use the quills for decoration. The quills were dyed using colors obtained from plants or animals and were attached to leather by sewing them on with sinew.

Quills were often stored in pouches as seen in the lower right here.

08. Red was one of the more popular colors. It was obtained from the cocineal bug, a small insect found hidden in a white coat on cacti.
